March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day is considered as a national day in Northern Ireland and an official bank holiday there.
St. Patrick′s Day is celebrated by the Irish and Irish at Heart in big cities and small towns. Its a time for fun. On the 17-th оf Marchalike with parades, «wearing of the green,» music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games.
In these day people go in churches services. Saint Patrick was the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland who is credited with bringing christianity to Ireland. Saint Patrick is most known for driving the snakes from Ireland.
So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died.
The national emblem of Ireland is shamrock. According to legend, it was the plant chosen by St. Patrick to illustrate the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish.
Green is one of the national colours of Ireland and also one of the signs of spring. Green stripes are painted on the streets where the parade will travel. People wear green shirts, ties, hair ribbons and hats.
Another symbol of St. Patrick′s Day is Leprechauns. Leprechauns are little people who wear green clothes. They have the pot of gold. They can not be hurt.
In this day people have fun in the streets. In the evening they arrange fireworks and salutes.
